A six-year-old boy said he doesn’t want to see dolphins anymore after being bitten by one at SeaWorld Orlando. The boy’s mother said that while visiting the dolphin-petting attraction Sunday night, the dolphin grabbed Brandon Jackson’s left arm! She had to hit the dolphin’s snout until it let go of the boy’s arm. A SeaWorld spokeswoman said the dolphin would be watched and might be retrained in a “behavioral-modification” program. The family was given a private dolphin viewing and four tickets for a return visit. Like they really wanna go back…

While at Las Vegas, I went to the shark exhibit at Mandalay Bay. Anyway, they had a petting exhibit in which they could pet some of the animals (not sharks of course, but other sea creatures like starfish). The children were told to make a fist, put out one finger and stroke gently. I saw many making fists and banging, rather than stroking. I also many doing other things to annoy the animals.
Yes, being mean to animals is bad karma. If that is what happened that little boy deserved it. Maybe it is cause the dolphin is pissed he is in a bowl. I do like your edit of the pic.
Hi my son was bitten this morning at SeaWorld after his overnight birthday party. The dolphin that bit my son was a the human equvilent of a 8 year old child and having a just turned 7 year old they are still learning what is acceptible behavior. Dolphins bite from birth as part of thier socialization. My son loves dolphins and it made me sad that while he was in the first aid room he said he didn’t want to pet the dolphins anymore but it was important to get him back over there trusting the dolphins again and not hurt his love of the dolphins. The trainers when we came back kept the biter away from the interaction area and had the dolphins come up so he could pet their tail area and feed them again. He is still a little wary but he still loves the dolphins and we will be back again and again.

If the kid decides he’s not a big fan of these beasts after one bit him on the arm – this is very sensible! What’s not very sensible is getting a warm fuzzy feeling about the whole thing.
I think that that kid pissed the dolphin off or something because i just went to olando at dicovery cove and swimed with two dolphines andthey were very nice and sea world owns discovery cove. Maybe the kid poked it in the blow hole.
But they never told the sorry on the news on how the mother lied about the whole incident. And on the security cameras there was no biting incident. Another person trying to get free stuff and Sue a huge organization.
Hmm. How would you feel being contained in a tiny pool, while every instinct in you tells you that you should be in the ocean (even if you were born in captivity, you think it’s bred out of them in one generation?!). I think you would feel confused and sad. The point here is WHY ARE WE STILL KEEPING THESE ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY FOR SHOW? Don’t support animal captivity by going to these places, then you won’t risk being injured by a confused animal.
Well i gotta say that i absolutly love dolphins. i have so many dolphin ornament and other things that i dont have any more room for anything else. I would love to pet the dolphins. actually its one of my life dreams. I’ve wanted to see the dolphins since i was 5

I think that the child may have prevoked the dolphin to bite or stuck his hand in the dolphins mouth. The little boy probley didn’t know or didn’t understand, that the dolphin would bite. It’s not really the dolphins fault either, it is an animals instinct to bite when provocked, plus animals should not be held in captivity!

These animals constantly suffer in this harsh enviroment. The dolphin would have bitten the boy because of the stres of being kept in a small concrete tank, in which it would be subjected to constant interference from humans and at night fireworks that provoke the dolphins into attacking eachother. They are driven mad with stress.

All of the animals at Sea World and Discovery Cove were either rescued or born in captivity. A turtle with a gaping hole in it’s shell and missing or paralyzed flippers from an encounter with some idiot boater in a ‘NO WAKE ZONE’ wouldn’t survive in the wild. Likewise the manatees with missing limbs etc. Sea World and especially Discovery Covedo do a good job in educating people about the things in nature they would feel no connection to otherwise.

More importantly, why are you arguing about the child’s provocation of the dolphin when none of you actually know all the facts? Here’s something you’re going to learn when you grow up; the news is structured and engineered to very skillfully piss you off. If you’re angry or sad you’re more likely to watch the story for longer. Arguing about whose speculation is more likely when you can’t possibly know all the facts is perhaps the best example of a snap emotional judgment I will ever see. You can’t let emotions ruin your perfectly good brain. It’s not fair to the brain. After all it, like the dolphin, is trapped unfairly in a tiny bowl.
sally – you are an idiot not only did we not sue we also turned down passes that were offered and worked with SeaWorld to insure charges were not pressed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife. For the others that just have to accuse my child of poking the dolphin or some other such nonsense. The dolphins had just finished a trainer interaction and were excited and wanting to play. My son put his hand out and it was bitten. As stated earlier biting is a normal behavior for dolphins and is part of their socialization. If you knew and loved dolphins you would know that the scraps on their skin is from biting and teeth scraping each other while playing and interacting.
Grow up people the main objective of the story was that we were supporting SeaWorld because another boy was bitten 2 weeks before. We also are trying to insure that people abide by the Marine Mammal protection Act and not attempt contact with wild dolphins. After this incident I PAID sallykins for two visits to Dolphin Cove and we had awesome dolphin swim encounters!
The Brandon Jackson family’s case I believe was dropped when we came forward in support of SeaWorld but do not know if they were given anything. Beetle (the dolphin that bit in both cases ) was transfered to the nursery for another year as he was just too young to have been put in the interaction area. He now understands the difference in his dolphin playmates, trainers and the people that can’t jump in and play and he is doing well.
ok i have noticed every time i go to any of these petting things the kids are out of control. you don’t bang or splash the water cuz its gonna scare the animal away. i am a horse trainer and its the same with every animal. my favorite animal is a killer whale but i have swam with dolphins many times and when you go to seaworld they tell how to pet the dolphin right. this kid most likely didn’t do what they asked and then paid the price for it. when they tell you to pet the dolphin first then give it a fish is a training method and you are training a dolphin when you are at those places. PLEASE LISTEN AND DO WHAT THEY SAY OR YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE LIKE HE DID!

i love dolphins so much. one of my dreams is to pet a dophin and to also swim with them. i think dolphins are one of the most beautiful animals in the world. i want to get a pet dolphin and keep it in my bathtub but i dont think my mom will ever let me. i can even laugh like a dolphin. in conclusion dolphins are so beautiful and i love them so much. they are so cute.

Seriously, I feel sorry for the dolphin, because it is being misunderstood, and for the kid, because he didn’t know any better. Although he should have been watched more carefully. Dolphins do play rough with one another, and it is true that the scrapes and scratches are from playing. The dolphin was probably just playing with the kid, but doesn’t know his own strength, especially if he’s young. he will learn.

Dolphins have personalities that vary as drastically as humans.
There are stories of dolphins who have rescued other dolphins, whales and even humans from a variety of dangerous situations. There are also dolphins that kill baby dolphins for fun. I’m glad not everybody in the world judges these animals based on incidents like this.
However.. how old was this dolphin? Young dolphins remain somewhat bitey even up to 10 years old. Dolphin emotion is difficult to determine, so whether it was an act of aggression or playfullness may be hard to tell.

Whether I know if this stories true or not (Considering it’s on the internet) I still want to comment.
Maybe the boy was using inappropriate behavior with the dolphin. Teasing it or hitting it or even yelling at it.
Otherwise the dolphin acted on something. Dolphins have feelings to. They have emotions and such. It might have taken it’s emotions out in a wrong way. It wouldn’t be the dolphins fault.
Or it might have had a tooth ache or something. I was watching a documentary the other day when a lion bit its owner just because of a tooth ache. Possible I guess.
It could be many things but I would not blame the dolphin. The dolphin just reacted on instinct.
And I believe that the private dolphin showing would be a good thing for the boy and the family. It will show them that dolphins are not horrible creatures. If that mother had any sense she would take them there knowing that these trainers are experts and knowing she has the choice about whether to lean over the tank or not.
While she has a right to worry about her son I do believe that sometimes you have to push passed that worry and think about whether it would help her son or not. I don’t think it’s right for her son to grow up being scared about dolphins.

Dolphins don’t like being touched on the face by strangers. At SeaWorld, it is the duty of the trainers running the petting interaction afterwards to clearly tell the visitors that the dolphins must not be touched on the face. If they didn’t, they weren’t doing their job. If they did, the kid and his mother were being the typical visitors who don’t listen to the rules and get too excited to care once the dolphin is within their reach.

They are wild animals, whether they are born in captivity or not (you can’t breed that wild nature out in one or two generations). That said, I think it is plausible that the dolphin may have become slightly irritated or for some biological reason, lashed out at the kid.

Dolphins are the kindest, human loving animals next to dogs. I luv dolphins so much, and have always dreamed of swimming with them, or even just petting them. I don’t think the boy did anything. I dunno, it could be like the tiger incident. The dolphin might have been trying to grab him to play or just get a closer look. It’s not like it has hands to do that with. The only way it can get a hold of something is to use it’s mouth.

I’ve been to SeaWorld Orlando the other day.There where guys who put their hand in the water, wait patiently and after some time dolphins would come up to them and slightly grab their hand without pulling their hand or hurting them and releasing them again. The dolphins would then stay with these guys and allow these guys to pet them and hug them. I asked if it would hurt and how they’re doing it, the guys replied that it won’t hurt and that they’re doing nothing; and proceeded with doing their thing. Pretty amazing. (I might add that this was not in the feeding area and the guys had no fish and it was not feeding time.)
I figured, that some people just don’t put their hand in the dolphin’s mouth; the dolphins come up to THEM and kinda greet them. So to all you SeaWorld Dolphin Cove trainers: It’s not always the people, it sometimes is the dolphin who just happens to like special people. Don’t come up with the “Don’t put your hand in the Dolphin’s mouth, for your own safety.” stuff. Guys who happen to know what they’re doing surely won’t sue you. They like to interact and play with the dolphins and obviously some dolphins like to play with them. Tone it down a bit and don’t be so sensitive. I myself am working for my company’s customer service; and I tell you: Never ever make your customer mad or he’ll never come back again. Be nice to your customers.

Greetings Humans. I am the dolphin in question. It is true that I did bite this little boy and for that I am very sorry. My only excuse is that I had eaten a tuna sandwich earlier that day and was shocked to find that it had little bits of my fellow dolphins in it. What troubled me the most, however, is that I found that I actually liked it!
I’m sure you will understand that, after discovering this disturbing fact about myself, I was a bit vexed and more than a little out of sorts. I lashed out at the first being to present himself; and that being was this poor, unfortunate boy.
After reading all of the responses to the original post, I am troubled over the tendency of some human beings to take the side of a wild animal over that of a small boy. Perhaps, in an ideological sense, you are as cannibalistic as I have so recently found myself to be. Very troubling indeed!

I feel like I have to establish some claim to dolphin related knowledge, so I’m going to just get this out of the way: I’m a marine biology major at an VERY respected marine-centered university.
Now that that’s out of the way, the focus of my education matters far less than a little common sense. The animal in question is a 12-foot long, 600 pound carnivore. They are big, they are strong, and they can be very aggressive. These are animals that, on MANY occasions, have been witnessed ganging up on and beating harbor porpoises to death. These porpoises are about the same size as a preteen child or petite woman.
Dolphins should be treated with caution as much as any other dangerous animal. They can and do attack without provocation and can seriously injure or kill a human being with minimal effort.
Get those childhood fantasies about Flipper out of your head, people. These are wild animals.
