Watch Out For Flying Stingrays
Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

An 81-year-old man suffered serious injuries in Florida this afternoon when a stingray leaped into his boat and stung him in the chest! The 3 foot ray left a foot-long barb lodged in the man’s chest. Paramedics took him to North Broward Medical Center with a closed chest wound and a collapsed lung.

I read that since Steve Irwin’s death Stingray City in the Grand Cayman Islands has had no bookings. It used to be one of thier main tourist attractions.
Swim at your own risk indeed!
i am actually goin to the cayman islands this christmas…..last year my paernts went and swam with them and took pictures..they were fine.
DONT PUSH THEM…MAKE THEM FEEL THREATENED OR HARRASS THEM AND THEY WONT ATTACK!! STEVE IRWIN…GOD BLESSS HIM…..TENDS TO INVADE THE ANIMALS TERRITORY AND THEY ATTACKED. IF YOU WENT INTO A BEARS DEN AND WERE TRYIN TO FORCE HIM OUT…HE’D ATTACK….STUPID ASS PEOPLE
I have to agree with Bridget – plus they most likely caught the sting ray. It did not “jump” into the boat… come on – do you ever see them jumping out of the water like fish???????
I have seen a stingray jump about 4 feet out of the water while I was snorkeling in Mexico.
So, STFU. THank you.
I have seen stingrays leap out of the water all the time during mating season in the Delaware Bay. Stingrays automatically whip their tail when you try to pick them up
Hang around this blog long enough and all kinds of things start jumping!
I actuall swam at the stingray bar with the sting rays the DAY AFTER STEVE IRWIN died… the stingrays in Grand Cayman have been voluntarily coming to humans to get food for years there now.. the sting rays steve irwvin was killed by had never been around humans…
the day i went the bar was PACKED with people from all of the tours… so that rumor is a lie… also the stingrays i got to be around were the sweetest ever.. i even got to hold one and they have learned that when a human leans torwards its “mouth” to curl up its skin and it appears they are giving you a kiss… so cute
i actually saw stingrays hang gliding outside my hotel window this morning.
I am an Aussie and I think Steve Irwin was the best thing to happen to Australia and animal conservation for ages. But, from a stingray’s point of view, I’m sure you’d retaliate too if you felt threatened. When we enter the water, we are in their territory so we need to respect these animals and consider the possible dangers.
Are devil rays , stingrays? Cause if so I’ve watched a few Tampa Bay games and I’ve seen some jumping as well. I think protective nets should be put around ball parks anywhere the Devil Rays play so they don’t jump into the fans……What were we talking about again I lost track….As far as Steve Irwin’s puttin’ another Barby in his hearty, he will be sadly missed!!! He was an embassador for the animals irregardless of the risks taken.
Fishing in Biscayne Bay today, near Elliot Key. Two rays jumped entirely out of the water! At least 3′ wide and flew 5 -8 yards before crashing back into water. Absolutely amazing and frightening. I have no doubt that ray jumped in the boat, after what I say today. Hair on back of my neck stood up!
On Dec. 29 & 30 at the tip of Anna Maria Island in Bradentin Florida (Bean Point), there were a few dozen stingrays flying 2-3 feet above the water. This event lasted for over 2 hours, something I have never witnessed before. Some were just flying up and others where flying out of the water and doing flips! AMAZING!
Between Dec 25-Jan 1, on Anna Marie Island (near Manatee Beach), we also observed the sting rays jumping 2-3 feet into the air. There would be a school of the stingrays swimming, then one or two would jump , then they would all keep swimming up the shore. We observed this at least once a day. I was able to video tape this event .
wendy! can you send me any of the video to post? thanks!
Google is the best search engine
Hi, just wanted to comment that we caught on video one of these creatures jumping out of the water. Very nice site, have some original images/stories that could contribute if properly referenced; mostly gators from Florida.
They don’t jump, huh? I happened on this thread while looking for a picture of a flying stingray. I have found a number of photos and some video of them jumping. One flew several feet out of the water today in Florida and stung a woman in the head. She is very much dead in spite of Shae.
No, they don’t jump. Within the order Rajiformes, there are the stingray family and the eagle ray family. One contains genera that breach (leap out of the water), and one doesn’t. That woman was hit by a spotted eagle ray, not a stingray.
and the only reason steve irwin died was cause he pulled the barb out, if he didnt he could have survived
