The finding according to Jose Leonardo Castillo Géniz, specialist in sharks of the Regional Center of Fishing Investigation of Cove, is an important discovery for marine Biology and the ictiología in Mexico in which the Scientific Research center and Superior Study of Ensenada participated investigating in the National Institute of Pesca (INP) and (CICESE).
The shark was reported in waters near Bay Turtles by a boat of Cove, in which it is constituted like the first registry of one of the rarest and mysterious sharks of the world.
It is the first Mexican and single registry thirty seventh of the world of the shark “bocón”, Megachasma pelagios in almost 40 years.

To his return to the Fishing Port of the Sauzal, in Cove, convinced of the peculiarity of the shark, and its possible scientific importance, the 27 of November, the owner of the Saúl boat Romero invited the Leonardo Castillo Géniz, like specialist in sharks to evaluate it.
Castillo Geniz that is investigator of the Regional Center of Fishing Investigation of Cove, of the National Institute of Pesca, and posgrado student of of the CICESE, when observing the elongado and flácido body of the animal, in addition to their particularly wide mouth, and with a group of small circular spots in the “lip” of the inferior jaw gave the first track on the possible identity of the specimen.
That same day was confirmed that bocón” first captured and documented in Mexico was a shark “.
Ruvizel Captain explained to the investigator who the shark “bocón” was captured in the neighborhoods Bay Turtles, in B.C.S., Mexico, that along with Island of Cedars and the Bay of Sebastián Vizcaíno in the western coast of the Peninsula of Baja California is considered as a zone traditional of fishing of sharks, like the shark mako, blue and the coludo.
With the support of the Courteous “Fishing ” company, of the Sauzal de Rodriguez, in Cove, the shark “megamouth” could conserve itself immediately under suitable conditions of refrigeration.
Later a team of technicians and students of posgrado of the laboratory of Fishing Ecology of the Department of Biological Oceanography of the CICESE, whose person in charge is Insipid Doctor Oscar Nishizaki made the first examination of the unit, of which was known was an immature female with a total stature of 214.9 cm and a considered weight of 27 kilograms.
The finding allowed that numerous morfométricas measures as well as skin samples of the stomach content, teeth and dentículos were obtained. In addition a complete series of photographies of the body of the shark was made. This information and the one that is generated in the next days will allow the specialists to be able to describe of detailed form the first exemplary east Mexican water registry.
Dice its stage of sexual immaturity of the unit was decided not to carry out its dissection and to try to maintain it intact for its future public exhibition.
According to the scientist the presence of the shark “megamouth” in waters of Mexico confirms the enormous diversity of sharks and rays that exist and the responsibility to obtain its conservation.
SOME DATA:
The Megachasma pelagios was discovered per time first in 1976 in waters of Hawaii, and their scientific description as new species was published in 1983 by Taylor, Compagno and Struhsaker. These authors defined on the basis of this unit a new family (Megachasmidae), a new sort (Megachasma) and a new and only species, M. pelagios.
Until the moment one has documented 37 individuals in the world in a period of near 30 years, including this new registry in Mexico, a capture per year in average.
This shark has been observed in waters of California and Hawaii, in the E.U., in Brazil, Ecuador, Senegal, South Africa, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and in the Philippines. According to the specialists the shark “megamouth” lives in the superior layer of the water column, feeding itself on small called crustaceans “eufásidos”, this way of feeding (filtration) is similar to which it uses the shark whale (Rhincodon typus) and the travelling shark (Cetorhinus maximus). The Maxima carves reported for the shark “bocón” is of approximately 550 cm (17 feet) and the males mature sexually to the 400 cm, whereas the females to the 500 cm in length overall.
