Lifeguard Goes Missing, Torn Flipper Washes Up

This is probably this last thing Lifeguard Sibulele Masiza saw before he went missing while bodysurfing off Second Beach this past weekend. Judging by the the torn flipper that was found, he was most likely the victim of a tiger shark. Ironically, Masiza had survived a previous shark attack back in 2004.

Live by the sword…….. Being from South Africa I would like to say that swimming can be safe, their are netted beaches. Unfortunatly though not everywhere. If your going out always bring a buddy.

I used to spearfish and dive for crayfish in front of the lighthouse off of Port st. Johns back in the early 1990’s when I was a more reckless young man and there was always a lot of shark activity on just about every dive there.

I always felt that the surfers, boogie boarders and body surfers around Second Beach were playing a game of Russian Roulette if they only knew what we were seeing on just about every dive.

I think that in that area of The Wild Coast it certainly is a numbers game.

This attack took place in the Transkei in South Africa and the picture in the article is of a ragged-tooth shark. He had just rescued someone and then he and a mate returned to the water. On their way in he was taken and just disappeared. The Transkei has no nets, has plenty of sharks, and is a really great place to surf…except for the sharks. Really sad losing a guy like that who made a real difference in his community.
