Giant Squid Headed for Oven?

The colossal half-ton squid, believed to be the largest ever caught, may be destined for the microwave oven. But they don’t want to cook it – just defrost it.

The 33 feet long, 1,089 pound squid appears to be by far the largest specimen of the rare and mysterious deep-water species Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, or colossal squid, ever caught. Scientists at the museum are considering using a giant microwave oven as a possible way to defrost the animal so they can study it. The mammoth squid can’t be left to defrost at room temperature because the process would take days, and the outside would rot while the inside stayed frozen.

There’s a microwave somewhere nearby that can handle that kind of job? Seriously, that’s a BIIIIIIG microwave.

Are there a LOT of these microwaves just laying about? Do people just randomly walk in and sit their cup of soup in the middle and leave it for 30 seconds. Seems a bit excessive, though it might be neat to watch.

Can we get a giant marshmallow and put it in the giant microwave to see what happens?
