This is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard of, I can not believe that people would really do that to any helpless animal such as these. I am ashamed that the govenrment of Canada is even okay with it, I may not live there but to think that could ever slip through a government like that! And who cares if the video is lying why would it be okay for the parents to die and leave the helpless baby to fend for itself when it hasn’t been taught how to do so yet, the survival of the pup is lowered so they might as well killed the pup too!

The man has to make a living. I’m sure no child aspires to be a seal clubber when they grow up. Baby seals most certainly do get clubbed and made into boots.

That is the most appalling thing I’ve seen in a very long time!! There is no excuse for going there and slaughtering a defenseless animal! And for them to do it to make money well there are many other ways to make money! That is just in excusable and very very disturbing!

Living here in Canada we hear of this all the time. We are told there is an abundance of seals and this is how we keep control of the numbers. Do I agree with them? NO!!! If there is such a problem then lets try and find another solution. Mother Nature usually looks after their own. What happened here I do not know. Our Government needs to find another solution to this so called problem. Where I live we have an abundance of squirrels and they get into our attics and chew through our ceilings. They are protected. It has cost thousands of dollars to seal off entrances and replace the materials they chewed through. When you fix one entrance they go into the next home and do the same. Sorry that I have carried on here but I too am looking for justice.

I live in Newfoundland, and the amount of people who actually seal here are few and far between in the very rural areas. Why is no one showing pics of the poor poor cows and the poor poor chickens and sheep? Because they are not cute right? What a pile of baloney…

1- In Canada it’s illegal too kill baby seals
2-the way they kill them might seam cruel but it’s the less hurtfull way to kill them, they’re kill instantly. Sometimes they’re still moving but thery are allready dead, it’s only reflex, like when a chicken continues to run even with the head cut off
3-The population of seal is curently rising, and thretening the fishing industry, because they eat all the fish…
Maybe you should look at a documentary called “Phoques” by Raoul Jomphe, you would see the other side of the story, the hunter’s side… It’s in french though… (I’m french too, so sorry if there’s some language problems in what I wrote)

Oh and this species of seal is NOT endangered! and they are not allowed to kill the pups. They have DFO boats out there right with the sealers to ensure that they follow the rules.

They still club them.
When they are moving, they may be stunned, but they are still alive.
It’s illegal but they still do it!
The seal population is way down this year b/c of the melting snow - they are drowning.

Get your facts straight please.

First of all, I am a proud Newfoundlander and an avid opponent of the seal hunt. You don’t often hear those two things in the same sentence. That being said, they do kill pups. Seal pups lose the white coat about three weeks after birth so in my books that�s still a pup. In terms of population there are a greater number of seals today then there were say, 30 years ago. However, this year alone they are noticing a dramatic decline in pup populations mainly because of the lack of ice. Many mothers have to give birth at sea and the pups drown. They still use clubs to kill seals and seals do not always die after the first blow. I still want to meet the vets who say this is a humane way to be killed.
For all my fellow animal lovers out there you will be happy to know that over 100 seal hunting boats are trapped in ice off the northeast coast of Newfoundland and its going to take a while for the coast guard to get them out…

oh guys, the seal hunt is just like anything else… blah, people eat, cows,chickens, fish, shark, and basically everything…. the only reason the seal hunt is such a big issue, is because of the white ice, and snow… god, if u went to a slaughter house to get a pig or something and they had white drapes over the floor, walls,celing… then u would have the same reaction.. but on…theres saw dust ond such on the ground to cover the RED blood up. im from canada, and the seals are over populated, and are eatting the bellys of indangered cod fish and others. thats it.. they go for the guts thats it. if we dont keep the seal pop. under control they will have all the fish gone, they will be on the ice more so and coming ashore. like really.. the seal hunt is just the same as n e thing else… and about the way they are killed, why dont someone here who is against the hunt come up with a better way of destroying the animal? if not keep yer pie hole shut.

1- Eventhough it is illegal for them to kill the pups, they still do (that is part of the problem).
2- They DO still use clubs, and often drown them (seals can hold their breath for up to 30 minutes, making this a very slow and painful process for the creatures).
Seal hunting is very cruel. These clubbers are typically sea fisherman driven by greed, NOT survival.

I agree with bluepaintred whole heartedly.

Sealers are mostly in the east coast of Canada, and really… their main source of income is in sealing and fishing. I can see why people are upset about it, but all of the seal is put to good use. Even their meat is considered a delicacy. And for the record, they don’t club seal pups because there isn’t a market for it.

To Me, So the seals need to be controlled so they don’t consume too much fish? You sound like a Japanese fisherman to me. The dolphins and whales need to die “for scientific reasons”. Really, it’s to remove a competitor for fish. Who’s overfishing? The seals? Give me break and keep your own pie hole shut.
You’re right about other animal deaths, but more wrongs don’t make the seal pup deaths right.

to betsy- seals eat the bellys of fish…yes… thats it. they spit the rest of the fish out. thats y they love cod, the nice bellys. and i read “me”;s comment, and they said nothing about dolphins or whales.. but if u wanna start a new topic fine. but dont put words in ppls mouths. and a lil fyi, me never once mentioned n e thing about the seal pups… and im sure now too you dont wear leather, or suade, or have ne thing made out of animal skin. give me a break. people like you is the reason why there is such a miscommunication about the fishery.

the seal hunt is a myth. seals are not endangered. seals are not clubbed but their population is controlled humanely as they multiply each spring like rabbits. overpopulation of seals results in the extinction of much sea life, their food supplies are vast but they tend to feed on one, convenient species until it is gone. fuzzy baby seals are cute however after 22 days or so from birth they gain an oily adult coat. the seal clubbing myth is well disproved and it it common knowledge and a joke in atlantic canada. celebrities with no real knowledge about the situation popularized this trend. just another reason why canadians think americans are retarded.

No actually I don’t wear leather or suede, at all, not even shoes. I eat very little meat and buy free-range when I do. I know he didn’t say anything about whales or dolphins, but when you start to say “we need to kill them, they’re eating all the fish” it’s what instantly comes to mind. Honestly, have the seals just started eating only bellies, or have they always, but we mind now? The miscommunication about the fishery? I think what you may mean is there are two sides to the argument and people strongly disagree.

The starving in Africa, the human rights abuses against women in India and Mexico, the list goes on and on. You all need to go to PETA and get your facts straight. It is only illegal for them to club the white coats. The ones that are being killed are still babies, just a few weeks old and have lost the white coat.
Most of Canadian income comes from seafood, not the seal hunt. Think about it, the hunt is only a few weeks out of every year.
Everyone can help stop this by refusing to buy any Seafood that comes from Canada until they stop the hunt! Hitting them in their pocketbook is the only thing that is going to have an affect.
And to be so ingnorant as to state that the seal hunt is a myth, when there are countless hours of video footage of the massacre, is yet another reason why Americans think that Canadians are cruel, snobbish and suffer from lack of education.

Regardless of the seal population, slaughtering them in such an inhumane way just shows the lack of compassion and the depth of the depravity of the Canadians who take part in or support this hunt.
There are videos of them skinning baby seals alive. You can not possibly argue that is an acceptable means of “controlling the seal population”.
Allowing such cruelties to exist is a direct reflection on the sad state of our society.

why would you say we suffer from lack of eduacation? america’s education system is so dammaged and lacking funds, while canada has one of the finest in the world. i wouldn’t make fun of anyone for that though, it’s just kind of sad. look beyond peta, research both sides. peta is very biased and most of the footage they have is from over twenty years ago. a handful of ignorant fishermen caught on tape should not colour an entire seafood industry, full of hardworking and honest people. have fun bringing down canada with your boycott. oh, and aren’t there worse atrocities you americans should be worrying about? the content of this video on youtube is what makes me sick, not the death of an animal that may as well be a chicken with it’s head cut off. bring on the colonal!

Give me ’stupid hippie’ over ’seal clubber’ anyday, thanks. Caring about the humane treatment of animals doesn’t take away caring for the humane treatment of people, different topic. You recommend clubbing Bush in the same statement that you propose we care about people more.
If this is an important part of the livelihood of the area, than the resistance to change can be understood. But it’s NOT an excuse to continue. I’m from Michigan, we’re bleeding jobs like never before. No one has announced that car makers will continue to produce more cars that will go unbought so that jobs will be protected. I read so much about the progressive Canadian govt. I find it hard to believe there is nothing that can be done. MI citizens are relocating, becoming reeducated, doing whatever they can to help themselves. It’s fairly bleak here job-wise, yet continuing a harmful practice isn’t being recommended.
The suggestion to stop buying Canadian seafood is a great one. In San Fransisco, the restaurant assc has started a movement boycotting CA seafood products and products from other areas that overfish or use cruel methods. No doubt, they’re just a bunch of hippies too.

If there was a white blanket spread out on the floor of a abattoir the images would be just as graphic. These people do not have the option of going to the local supermarket buy anit-biotic, growth hormone injected wrapped in plastic environmentally polluting “food”.
Before you judge, actually look at independent information, not information produced by the animal rights businesses. Make no mistake about, these are business. Take a look at their financial statments and see how much these “activists” are being paid for their good work.

One inhumane act doesn’t make another acceptable. Only an ignorant person would believe that the seal hunt is exaggerated. The seal hunt activists go to the ice floes every year, sending back fresh video of the carnage. The Canadians only want us to think that it it exaggerated so that we do not expose the real atrocities that go on there.
Tradition is not a good reason to continue such a horrid act. It used to be “tradition” to have people as slaves too, but that stopped and we all got along just find. It used to be “tradition” that a womans place was in the home, and that women did not vote. You can not justify acts based on tradition. Most educated people will see past the excuse of “tradition”.
As for the lack of education in Canada, it amazes me how canadians always are so full of patriotism, yet none of the worlds great people ever come from there. Oh wait, you did give us Pamela Anderson and a couple of wrestlers. No doubt they received a stunning education.
The seal hunt is pointless. It is a small part of the Canadian economy. Therefore, anyone who supports such slaughter for no justifiable reason is severely disturbed.
Again, remember to boycott Canadian seafood until they stop the senseless slaughter! Hitting them in the pocket book is the best way to get them to agree to end the cruelty, since most canadians seem to see nothing wrong with skinning infant animals alive.

Is it because they’re cute ?
I’m from Canada and yes they have the seal hunt but it’s to keep the population at bay (otherwise the fish in Canada and the states would be eaten up by the seals and we wouldn’t have any)
We’ve all screwed up the envirionment and now we have to try to keep the balance that we have so it doesn’t get worse.
If the seals eat all the fish then the other animals that eat the fish will starve and then the things that eat those animals will starve too. It’s a big giant cycle. I’m not saying I like the idea at all but it’s something that has to be done.
Why is it hunting is ok and eating meat is ok but seal hunting is this awful crime against nature when all they’re doing is feeding their family’s and keeping the balance is nature ?
