Teen Gets Seriously Stung at Cable Beach
![]()
A 15-year-old boy was stung by a dangerous jellyfish at Broome’s Cable Beach, AU. The teenager was swimming near the rocks in front of the beach cafe about 1:00pm AWST yesterday when he was stung. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated for irukandji syndrome. (Symptoms of irukandji syndrome include lower back pain, breathing difficulties and a sense of ‘impending doom’.)
Cable Beach has already been closed twice this month after a 21-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man were stung and then treated for the syndrome.
Authorities are urging people to obey beach closure signs and wear protective clothing when swimming in WA’s northern waters. I’d suggest just staying out of the water.

irukandji is a tiny microscopic box jellyfish that is rarely seen.
