Last week I was at Surfside Beach walking out on the fishing pier. Looking down into the water I saw a small shark with black tips on it's dorsel and tail fins. I later found out it was most likely a blacktip shark. There were several people swimming not far from there but the shark didn't seem to be interested.

may I add when I was snorkeling in Florida I saw a shark about 6 ft and it just swam right by. I actually tried to get closer to get a better picture :) I was about 5-10 ft from it. Of course I was a freshman in HS

We went to MB Arcadian Shores the last week in August in 2010 and we are going back in 2011. I believe there was a shark spotted just a baby one and they cleared the water, but that was the time when all the storms were going on far away and the water was getting tossed around. My mother is scared to go in but you better believe my son and I will be in that water :) hes 5, now we just know what to be aware of. I swam out really far last year and got a huge shell! I probably wont be doing that this year lol, honestly. But you only live once and I'll say a little prayer and hop in that water. Oh yeah a little 5-6 ft shark also beached in the very low waters about less than a foot deep the last morning we were there. I was mad because we had just missed it.

I went to the beach with a friend for a week and had no problems with sharks. Rays were everywhere in the tidle pools one day, but they were only angel rays. There was one time when I was walking through a deep tidle pool with my younger sister, 6, and something pretty big came up and hit my leg with some power! It felt somewhat like a ray but the water wasn;t see-through so it could have been anything! Overall, I do not think that you will have any problems with sharks.

Me and my family go to North Myrtle Beach every year. The only place I have ever seen a shark is on the Cherry Grove Pier. They catch baby ones all the time. I guess if there's baby ones, there is also big ones. We all still go in the ocean and have fun, though. You could be dwelling on the idea of getting bit by a shark and miss out on a great ocean. Of course you should be careful and take precautions as you should before you do anything, but I'd be more afraid of the undertow. Seriously, don't be afraid. Have fun.

I have fins so I usually swim a mile offshore and then come in. This summer some idiot called 911 and reported me drowning off MB state park. The lifeguards wanted to ticket me but the cop was cool and told me to just leave the park. He also told me to go to Georgetown to swim since they have nolaws about ocean swimming. I have seen sharks off MB by the pier and in the surf zone. Makes me wonder whats off shore when I'm way out. Hope they think I'm just another preadtor and leave me alone. The water down here is also very murky which I don't like

On July 12, 2010 swimming just a little north of Surfside beach at the Myrtle beach resort a 5 foot spinner shark jumped out of the water twice about 50 feet from me and my son, which was only 20 feet from another couple of people. This was at about 4pm, beach was loaded.

Im visiting Myrtle Beach from the west coast and have been here a month and a half. I take two to three trips to the state park a week to cool down and swim, three days ago while body surfing I seen a huge wave (for here) coming in and as I watched it grow into a wall coming at me the water dropped from chest deep to knee deep. In the face of the wave I saw a 6' shark swiming across the front of it coming right for me. S**T! It was plain as day and the wave was almost on top of me as I saw the shark turn toward the sea. I caught that wave reluctantly, cussing and praying and jogged out of the surf calling it a day. I was about ten feet from the shark which was at eye level and saw it very clearly, from what I can gather I think it looked most like a Black tip. This is the only shark Ive seen here and I try to stay aware of my surroundings. I was back in the surf again today, no fins or dark masses, though I stayed alot closer to shore.

I have lived in Myrtle Beach for 6 years now and love the beach!!!!I especially love to collect shark teeth and let me tell you I have some big ones!If you do research you will find that Horry county is on a top ten shark attack beach list but alot of people that live here don't even know how many people get bit every year here or that we are on a top ten attack list, here is the link...
http://blog.rehava.com/10-most-dangerous-places-for-shark-attacks
I am a store owner on ocean blvd here in Myrtle and do believe that Myrtle Beach is keeping quiet on the bites that happen here because they think it will scare people away from coming here but I think people should know. I still go in the ocean with my 4 year old son but we stay very close to shore, like knee deep or less water. My advise to everyone is stay cautious and don't swim at dawn and dusk those are feeding times, stay away from piers they are shark magnets, and sand bars are breeding grounds for sharks. On the positive side tons of people swim in the ocean everyday and don't get bit but doesn't hurt to be cautious and follow your human instinct,if you feel like are shark is around you the percentage is high that there is.

It was Thursday June 17, 2010 at 8:00 when my son Bryceton was swimming in the waters at Myrtle Beach and I was taking pictures of him, the next thing I knew I saw a shark fin moving around the water I thought someone was playing a joke. Then I thought what if it is real so I made my son get out of the water and I stood still to get a closer look it was about five feet long and I saw it real good so I knew then it wasnt some kind of prank. Since then I educated myself about sharks and there environment and I know not to be anywhere people are fishing off the beach and not at 8:00p.m. and be aware of my surroundings at all time.

I am confused because some of the sites say that Myrtle Beach is the least likely place for sharks because there are no sand bars like in FL...but then other sites say it is the most dangerous...so wich is it??

I have grown up in South Carolina and my family goes to the beach each summer...in 24 years I have never seen a shark in the Myrtle Beach area; however, that does not mean they aren't out there. There is absolutely no reason to freak out...you just have to use common sense and be a responsible swimmer. Avoid piers, areas where people are fishing off the beach, don't swim at dawn or dusk and don't isolate yourself. It is always better to swim around or with large groups of people. Sharks are not evil monsters out to eat you, which unfortunately is a misconception many people have..you just have to remember that we are in their habitat and it is only natural for them to be curious. For those of you still too scared to take a dip in the ocean...you are more likely to be struck by lightning than to be attacked by a shark :)

I've been going to Garden City for around 10 years now. As I've got older I've become more cautious of the ocean because I understand what lives there. I've always took the precautions as to what I should wear and how to act in the water but that doesnt help if your between knee and mid thigh high water. It was two summers ago my family and I were on vacation and it had been a rough week for the lifeguards. There had been a storm off shore and animals were coming further in. So of course I was very cautious of my surrondings. I was alone in the ocean boggie boarding and was maybe just over knee high water. I had rode a wave in and was walking back out when I caught something out of the corner of my eye. I immediatly froze and stood still as I watched two huge six or seven foot sharks swim two feet from me. they swam right on by me and continued on down the coast. I scarred me real bad. Those 10 seconds it took felt like twenty mins. But I stood still and watched. i didn't freak out an run. I didn't want to draw the sharks attention towards me. As soon as the were away from me I turned and ran out. My dad had been watching the whole thing and says I looked like I was walking on water coming out of there. I didn't go back in the water again that day but I did go back in the next day. We go there every summer and we're going back in a little over a month and I will get in the water. This is what people don't understand. Sharks are no more dangerous than any other animal we are living with on land. Where I'm from just walking out into my yard there is a chance there may be a rattle snake there that could bite me. Sharks are the same. You don't stop walking outside because of snakes or fear of any other animal that leaves there so you shouldn't give up being in the ocean because animals live there. Yes, I am terriefied that I will be in a shark situation. Yes, I go back in the water every year. Just remember to be smart when your in the water. Be aware of your surrondings. Look for fish or people that are fishing. Wear the right colors and dont act like you are a wounded animal. Remeber beaches are for fun, not to have you scared out of your mind.

South Carolina comes in at #9 in the top 10 most dangerous places for shark attacks world wide and let me tell you, that totally freaked me out. I think the scariest thing to me is not being able to see whats under the water with you and whats watching or stalking you as you are swimming without a care in the world. . . I mean yes we can all be aware of our surroundings, not wear flashy jewlery (which looks like scales), not splash around (which simulates a wounded fish or animal), wear dark colors, not be bleeding etc. . . but honestly? how does that help you when you are just standing in thigh deep water? I mean from what i have researched and from what ive read on here, it seems like no matter how careful you are and try to do everthing right, if they want to bite you they will!! and there have been sharks who literally beach themselves going after food! Although it is really rare!! Sharks don't like the taste of humans at all, once they bite they either let go which cold severe a major vein or artery anyways causing you to go into shock and drown or die from the blood loss , or they eat so quick it doesnt click until after they've swallowed and by then its too late. It is very scary to hear about attacks or see them on tv shows!! Trust me!! but I mean, like the statistics say, you are more likely to die in a car accident on the way to the beach then have an encounter or attack from a shark. Life is too short to deprive yourself from the things we love to do most just because we are scared of the unknown! but don't think for a second that its completley safe because its not!! no matter what time of day or how deep you go, it could still happen. It is their home and they are curious about us just as we are of them!! so be safe and have fun! Keep your eyes open for the warning signs of a shark being present, and do what you can to stay safe :)
