A 20-year-old man is recovering after being bit by a shark off the coast of Shark Bite City New Smyrna Beach.

Justin Lewis was surfing Sunday just after 5:30 p.m. near the south jetty when the shark bit his right hand, leaving 6 to 8 puncture wounds…

Lewis was treated at a hospital and is expected to be OK.

And that’s why we don’t surf at dusk.
    Or in Shark Bite City.

WE WERE THERE 2 DAYS PRIOR TO THIS ATTACK, AND SAW A COUPLE OF FINS IN THE WATER, WE TRIED TO WARN A FEW SWIMMERS OUT THERE,BUT THEY DIDN’T BELIEVE US! ( I BET THEY BELIVE US NOW)

yah there are alot of shark bites here
but hardly any serious or fatal

the picture is of a great white wich is not found in that area. I live in new smyrna. Part of the reason there are so many bites is becuase there are so many people. Also there are not as many large sharks in the area as others. Just small and maybe adult sharks in the area.

if you go there than you would know the drop off
from the jetty 500 feet to the right is shark territory

i was born and raised in nsb, up until a year ago i lived there. ive surfed everyday, night and day,as for sharks, they are always there, even if you dont see them.
when they bite a human, its a taste test. thats all. they dont generally eat people. as for the bites, they look alot worse than they are honestly.

That picture is ridiculous and misleading. Most of the shark bites are no worse than a dog bite. Yes there is a lot of sharks here but non that will cause serious injury. But if it keeps dumb tourists away then there is lots of man eating sharks…lol…

I was at new smyrna this summer. While I was in the intercoastal we got out of the boat it was about waste deep and the water was clear blue. A shark swam right around me and I ran to the boat.I loved new smyrna.Youshould really go.There are no sharks that big.

at least get a picture of the sharks that actualy inhabit those waters! Great whites have never and will never be in New Smyrna. We have black tips and Bull sharks. The media blows these bites way out of proportion. They have people thinking there going to meet jaws if they walk into the water there. The bites are minor if that.
