Shark Bites Boy Off N.C. Island… Probably

Officials believe a 9-year-old might have been bitten by a shark last Monday.

William Early, of Wilmington, was surfing in shallow water off Bear Island in the Hammocks Beach State Park around 4 p.m. on May 26 when he got off his surfboard and a large fish attacked him.

The kid suffered lacerations to his upper and lower left arm. He underwent surgery at a Wilmington hospital to correct some nerve damage and has returned home to recover.

Doctors said William’s wounds were consistent with a shark bite.

just the news i wanted to hear, since i was in the water six miles up the coast at the exact same time.

and the sad thing is, surfing was pretty lousy all weekend — a bit of chop, no smooth curling breakers. definitely no waves worthy of a shark bite.

Saw a shark same place yesterday July 6th. Beware of the shallow murky water of bear Island.
