I saw a fin stick out of the water yesterday at Dillon Beach, late in the afternoon. My dog had alerted me to it as he barked at the water and we turned and saw it!! Very scary as our dogs had been swimming in the water just minutes before.
Dillon Beach is in Marin County, north of SF for those of you unfamiliar with this coast.

Northern CA (San Francisco)has a large great white population and cold waters. Southern CA (Los Angeles/San Diego) does not have many great white sightings. Look up "The Red Triangle", it's a GW hot spot that covers a large portion of Northern CA.
