Aquarium Gets New Resident

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has something new on exhibit for the Labor Day weekend. A young great white shark spent its first full day on display.

The great white is less than a year old. She’s a small female, about 4 and a half feet long and weighs 55 pounds.

Aquarium collectors netted the great white August 16th in Southern California’s Santa Monica Bay. She was held in an ocean pen for 12 days before her behavior and feeding patterns indicted she was ready for transport.

This is the fourth time in its history the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been able to put a great white on display. The three before this one have all successfully been released into the wild.

Didn’t that first one at Monterey eat the tuna and some of the other fish? We went to see it when it first arrived–it was actually less impressive than the sunfish and the bluefin.

I agree I didn’t find it as impressive as the sunfish! I do believe that they eneded up having to release the shark back out into the ocean because of various sharks were actually being chomped on not so much the tuna!!!! Crazy…you’d think they would learn after the 4th time!

She’s nowhere near as big as the last one they let go because she was eating her fellow fish.

I wish I could’ve gotten a better look at her last saturday, but there were a lot of assholes using their flash and she wouldn’t come down much from the top.
