A really big turtle was found dead on Muriwai Beach Monday morning. The 8 ft long, 3 ft high, 5 ft wide turtle, believed to be a leatherback, had not been dead long when Linda and Peter Steen found it.

Am I to believe that the man next to the turtle is 8′ tall then?
That’s definitely a Leatherback. Probably 150 years old. And I agree with Max, he certainly doesn’t look 8 ft. long…lol

I am the person in the article who came across this magnificent creature dead on the beach.
My partner in the photo is only 5ft 11′ I am not married to an 8ft guy thank god.
The turtle as you can see by the photo would have been about 6ft 5inches long. Also worth noting, the turtle was not removed from the beach, its head was cut off for analysis purposes and his carcass left to rot on the beach. (It took a long time to rot down and traces still remain) Analysis was carried out by authorities and it was deemed to be at least 200 years old.
