A woman was bitten by a shark while she was swimming near a sandbar in Biscayne National Park today. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials, the bite was severe but not life-threatening.

”It took a big chunk out of her leg, but luckily missed an artery,” said Lt. Arnold Piedrahita.

The 43-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was celebrating the holiday with friends, swimming and sunbathing on the sandbar, when she felt something bump her leg. She looked down and saw she’d been bitten by a nurse shark.

Nurse sharks are common in Florida, and they typically reside in shallow waters. Happy 4th!

Do you know what your talking about? Nurse sharks are very friendly sharks, so this lady must have stepped on it. Why are you trying to make people afraid of sharks? Surly you know how not dangerous sharks truly are? Please sharks are dying and need our help, please stop making sharks appear as though they are monsters.

i am in Miami at the moment on holiday from ireland and 3 days ago i am certain i saw somthing surface about 40 feet from me. no one would beleive me and i could not swear that it was a shark or maybe a dolphin it was about that size however i must say that it did make me feel very uncomfortable in the water, i have a deep respect for these animals however i still have no yearning to swim with them, its their ocean so i just got out and left the (animal) to its own territory
