Giant Shark Washes Ashore In Long Island

A live shark washed ashore on Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County Tuesday morning. The 24-ft basking shark was spotted flailing about by some surfers at about 9 a.m.

The surfers dialed 911, and wildlife officials rushed to the aid of shark but they were unable to save the animal. Unfortunately, the shark later died.

New York State Parks official George Gorman said Tuesday that researchers will examine the shark to determine a cause of death. After that, it will be buried in nearby sand dunes on the beach.

Interesting video when you look at the scale between the shark and the bystanders… Gives you some idea of what a 20ft Great White would look like!!!

first of all I would like to know what Mihaela’s comment was….what language? I hope the web-site will tell us the cause of death….we never get the rest of the story

Well it’s sad that it died, but that shark is certainly nothing to be afraid of. It’s a Basking shark.. they only eat plankton and they are not aggressive. No human has ever been attacked by one, that’s for sure. It’s the bull sharks you gotta watch out for…
