Monterey Bay Puts White Shark on Display… Again

20577474_640X480
For the fifth time, the MBA has placed a young white shark on exhibit.

The new 5 feet 3-inch female was collected on Aug. 12 near Malibu after she got caught in fishing nets. The shark is eating and seems comfortable. She was moved Wednesday to the 1 million gallon outer bay exhibit where they hope to keep her for a couple months before releasing her.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is still the only aquarium in the world ever to keep a young white shark for more than 16 days.

Man I would LOVE to visit the MBA right now! I hope it survives and stays past 16 days!

MBA is the ONLY aquarium who has successfully kept a Great White for more than 16 days and released it back to the wild. This is their 5th shark. While I don’t support what they’re doing, I have to admit they’re at least doing it right.

Are they really doing it right? The purpose of putting on display is to learn more about them and show the public these creatures safely. The problem is, we don’t know enough to keep the whites in captivity long enough to justify this and although they’ve done this successfully before, they’ve not gained any true knowledge from it and risked killing a beautiful fish for no real benefit. Save the money to keep it Are they really doing it right? The purpose of putting on display is to learn more about them and show the public these creatures safely. I wish MBA would take the money they use keeping this fish alive and give it to marine research so we can learn about it in open waters where it belongs instead of in captivity where it can’t be its natural self. Leave these fish alone and study them as they should be…in the oceans

the problem is you keep rambling.

Megan. The Great White Shark is a beautiful creature. It needs to be killed and gutted in front of large money-paying audiences so that we can learn more about them. Learning about them is the only effective way of killing more of them in an efficient and humane manner. The more we can kill, the more we can learn about them and can kill even more of them, learning yet even more about them.

Theoretically, by the time we kill them into extinction, we will know enough about them to preserve them!

So stop being a stick-in-the-mud and get with the program. If you love the Great White Shark, you must be willing to kill all of them. It’s the only way to help them. THIS IS SCIENCE!

  11. 11joeshmoe

uh wow. if you want to kill all of them then you obviously are not a fan but more insane than anything

  12. 12mrniceguy

You, sir, are a moron. Wit is entirely wasted on you.

I live near this tourist trap. I think I’ve seen every one of those sharks. They don’t seem to be unhappy there, they just kinda swim and eat for about 3 weeks and then are released. You cant take pictures of them either. Supposedly it upsets them. Eh, they’re fun to see, but they don’t do anything really worth seeing. They float around all day. It’s kinda like how you feed bears chocolate bars and snack foods to keep them sleepy and funny. I just go to that tank for the sunfish. I kid you not, those sunfish love attention.

Actually Doteupacat, they are unhappy. I work in an aquarium and although they can learn to adapt, they get frustrated having to swim in the exact same place over and over. Think of it like this, you could totally adapt to living in let’s say, the biosphere but over time you’ll get bored of those surroundings and go slightly mad because you’re stuck in that same place and can’t get out. Our sharks adapt well but overall they have their days where they start snapping at anything and even bang into things. I don’t like seeing it and for a white, it’s much worse. They are not meant to be kept in a contained environment.

Regardless, I would love to be able to see a great white in MBA but not worth the journey so I do cage dives instead.

mr. nice guy you don’t sound so nice while talking about eradication of the white shark. Some sharks have to be sacrificed in the interest of science but not to the point of wiping them out.

Uh-oh…we have another strong reader here!

Laura, go back and read my post very, very carefully. Then have someone smart explain the ironic statements to you. After that, you can giggle vacuously, giving the impression that you now “get it.”

When you have done all of the above, you should then cancel your internet, leaving the on-line conversation to those who can keep up.

    Dur, fish be chillin yo.
