Mermaid, did you even watch the video??? Clearly not. They are scientists (from National Geographic, no less!), didn’t kill the shark, and took lots of precautions to make sure it was going to be OK. They tagged it and will release it.

Anyone who thinks Great Whites are critically endangered isn’t very educated. Great Whites are thriving. Hardly a day goes by where a Great White isn’t spotted off California by a fisherman or surfer. I would imagine it’s the same all over the world. I laugh every time I hear “there aren’t many of these big ones left out there” yet it seems like we are seeing more and more that are inching towards 20 feet long.
I’m all for protecting them but to think that they are near the edge of extinction is laughable.

Anyone who speaks about others having half a brain should know how to spell the word MORON before they make their assault. All “respectable” fishermen exercise conservation tactics on a daily basis. The fact that these scientists are using this to better educate others so that they may conserve more in the future is a good thing…not bad Mermaid. We learn by studying not by being “MORANS”!

From 6 billion to 40000 is a pretty big fucking drop and that’s why we would endangered. I wonder where this guy got 40,000 from. Everything I’ve seen says there are no reliable numbers, and in the history of the world there have probably never been more than 10,000,000. They’re apex, carnivorous predators, and their numbers stay low SO THEY CAN SURVIVE. You can’t just look at a number and say, “oh there isn’t going to be any left because the number is so low,” or “oh that number is so high, we shouldn’t worry about it going extinct.” if there were only 40,000 ants left, I’d say that’s endangered; 40,000 sharks: no danger.
