Fiji Diver Believed To Be Victim of Shark Attack

Divers are combing Yadua waters in Bua for a man believed to be the victim of a shark attack.

Captain Kaukau Corrie said they watched helplessly as fellow diver, Henry Usimewa, 19, struggled and fought off an unseen creature before he was dragged beneath the waves.

Mr Corrie said when they rushed to his aid less than half a minute later, Mr Usimewa was nowhere to be seen.

“Around 9.30am we spotted him surface about 15 metres from the boat,” said Capt Corrie. “I can still hear his screams as he fought off something that pulled him under. It was terrifying.

“He was wearing his diving jacket but was pulled clean from it.

“We looked whole day and whole of Tuesday but we couldn’t find him except for his diving gear and sack of sucuwalu.

“We saw that his regulator hose had been bitten off. We are horrified and scared to dive in this area.”

The search for Mr Usimewa is expected to be called off today.

I am guessing Tiger shark… I hope he went quickly…without much pain.

Most shark attacks in Fiji are, unfortunately, against locals who have recently caught fish attached to their belts. The sharks are going for those fish….

I agree with Casey. Especially because the body wasn’t recovered. Sounds like a Tiger.

But I don’t follow you, Collin.

This shark obviously went for the human and ate him. What do fish have to with the instant case?

I am guessing Tigershark or bullshark

Brilliant Sherlock you must be American…

  6. 6dru

    You must be a tool.

They are attracted by the bag of dead fish trailing nice smells through the water that’s attached to the diver’s gear. It’s very unfortunate. Condolences to his family.

I enjoy scuba diving very much. I have dove with 14′ lemon sharks, and have never felt threatened. This was obviously a case of mistaken identity.

its true, sharks are actually more attracted to fish blood than humans. i didnt know that tiger sharks are common for taking the whole body, i thought great whites did

Yeah most probably a tiger, but don’t rule out a Great White because recent tagging show that they often migrate to tropical waters from the cooler southern pacific region. Also have seen videos of Youtube, one in particular, where the divers where literally feeling up the shark and they had their hands all over the shark, and I don’t mean the occasional stroke as it swam past, I mean full on massaging the fish. The some hand fed it. I think thats gonna make them lose their cautiousness to people, and hand feeding them will make then associate people with food. The their more likely to investigate swimmers etc who are not aware of their presence and approach and wont be able to push them away.

Don’t rule out a GWS, recent findings show that they regularly enter tropical waters, not sporadically as previously thought. And most that are in in the Southern Pacific follow a similar migration pattern.

Mistake identity my ass. those waters are clear as heck you idiot. sharks to devour people sometimes just because they’re hungry you know. i’m sure the identity was mistaken the entire time he was being attacked. what a moron you are. He’s in God’s arms now I’m sure. God bless his parents

  13. 13Audrey

So sad. May God Bless him and his family…

  14. 14Gwert

You call him a moron and then invoke God. Wow, fantasy island. There is no god, idiot.

  15. 15Ruth

    i believe that people

  16. 16Ruth

i believe that people shouid take very much care in were they swim and if there is anything suspicious in the water you shouid be catious and warn evryone around you (that is if u think what it is) I reckon people shouid keep safe in where they swim (not in deep far areas where noone can see you ofcourse) stay safe and always make sure that there are people around you and that you are not on your own (no matter what age you are.) i wouid also like to add that fiji shouid be responsible for there parts of their waters and shouid find some solution to severe shark attacks. because people come for holidays to relax and enjoy the beaches not to GET BITTIN! (soz for my spelling..
