Ted Danson is saying traditional British fish and chips is to blame for the near extinction of an endangered species of shark.
According to Telegraph.co.uk, Danson said the “fish” enjoyed by millions of Brits in their fish and chips could be “spiny dogfish”, a rare species of shark that is on the World Conservation Union Criticially Endangered List.
The Cheers actor, who founded Oceana, the largest international group focused soley on ocean conservation, said the dogfish was once the most abundant shark species in the world but has been brought to the edge of extinction by over fishing.
The UK is the fourth biggest shark fishing nation in Europe, hauling in almost 8,000 metric tonnes of sharks and rays, the bulk of which comes from the Northeast Atlantic.
Danson, said much of this catch, including the endangered shark species, is marketed as “rock salmon” and is ending up in the fish and chips.

On his KIIS-FM radio show Monday, Ryan Seacrest said he decided to take a dip in the ocean over the weekend and apparently got bit by a shark.
Seacrest said he was “about eight feet out” when he felt something swim by him. He thought it was a stick but then it took a bite and swam off!
The American Idol co-host obviously wasn’t hurt too badly… he still went on the air to blab about it.

Last weekend “noted photographer” Nigel Barker spent some time at the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament in Martha’s Vineyard. But he wasn’t there to go fishing. He was there as a spokesperson for The Humane Society, helping to spread the message that the tournaments are just plain cruel. Nigel even went down on the docks to record the gruesome weigh-ins and the fate of the unlucky sharks.
Visit Nigel’s blog to see all the pics.

Heidi Klum’ got guts. She jumped into the water with 45 sharks, without a cage, in the Bahamas for a Discovery Channel show.
Heidi said she’s not sayin’ that everyone should swim with sharks, but sometimes you have to jump over your own shadow in order to learn something that you will never forget for the rest of your life. Huh?

Amy Wino spent the past week at Bryan Adams’s villa in Mustique to freshen’ up for the new year. Apparently Amy says daily scuba diving trips with the Adams, and a gaggle of wild reef sharks at feeding time, have helped her kick her addictions.
“I’ve learnt to appreciate simple things, like the beauty of nature. And it’s taught me to face my fears. It’s a different world down there. I can look at things in a new way.
“I’ve come to the realisation that life is short, so I want to make sure I live every minute of it.â€
Yeah, right.

Hayden Panettiere, just back from a dolphin protest in Japan, hung out with Rob Stewart, star and filmmaker of the award winning documentary SHARKWATER at the November 1 screening hosted by GEN ART at the W Hotel in Los Angeles. Heroes star Hayden Panettiere was in tears yesterday after watching the slaughter of a pod of dolphins.
The actress was among 30 protesters who paddled on surfboards in an attempt to stop Japanese fisherman during their annual dolphin massacre.
But before the surfers could reach the dolphins, a fishing boat intervened using the boat’s propellers to block their way.
The fishermen then produced a long boathook to chase off the protesters. Dang! They mean business!
The confrontation lasted more than 10 minutes before the surfers were forced to return to the beach.
A defeated Panettiere is now back in LA.

NBA star and blogger Gilbert Arenas says there are no such things as “shark attacks” in his latest blog entry…
There Are No Such Thing as Shark Attacks
I know this is random, but I just want to clear this up for people out there.
There are these things called shark attacks, but there is no such thing as a shark attack. I have never seen a real shark attack.
I know you’re making a weird face as you’re reading this. OK people, a shark attack is not what we see on TV and what people portray it as.
We’re humans. We live on land.
Sharks live in water.
So if you’re swimming in the water and a shark bites you, that’s called trespassing. That is called trespassing. That is not a shark attack.
A shark attack is if you’re chilling at home, sitting on your couch, and a shark comes in and bites you; now that’s a shark attack. Now, if you’re chilling in the water, that is called invasion of space. So I have never heard of a shark attack.
When I see on the news where it’s like, “There have been 10 shark attacks,†I’m like, “Hey, for real?! They’re just running around? Sharks are walking now, huh! We live on the land, we don’t live underwater.â€

Britney Spears saved an elderly couple from a jellyfish-infested beach during her Mexico vacation.
The 25-year-old singer, who was satying at Punta Mita’s Four Season hotel over the weekend, warned two older guests to be careful of jellyfish.
She reportedly told the older couple: “Be careful, there are lots of Man o’ War jellyfish washing up on shore, you don’t want to get stung.”
Uh, thanks Brit.
