Shark Kills Girl Just Meters From Shore!

A 15-year-old French girl on vacation in St. Paul, Reunion was killed in a shark attack while snorkeling in the Indian Ocean. According to the BBC, it is the second fatal shark attack near the island this year.

The Daily Mail reports that the young lady’s body was cut in two at the torso with part of her body taken away with the shark.

“The girls were in an area of St Paul bay where swimming is not allowed. She would have died instantly. The operation to recover the upper part of her body is ongoing,” said Gina Hoarau, the head of public safety on the island.

Previous attacks have been further off the coast on surfers and wind surfers, reports France24, but the young girl was just “a few meters” offshore. A couple weeks prior to the fatal attack, authorities had warned water enthusiasts to be on the lookout.

Surfer Attacked by Shark at Reunion Island!

Xavier Brunetiere, general secretary at the Reunion town hall, said the surfer’s right foot and his hand were seriously injured, in the attack at Saint Leu, located in a marine reserve on the western side of the island.
The man, whose identity was not released, is aged about 40 and is an experienced surfer, Brunetiere said.
Witnesses said the shark had severed a hand and a foot from the victim, but he made it back to the beach by himself. His life was not in danger, Brunetiere said.
Shark attacks here have been increasing in the last two years, with three surfers killed in the last 13 months.
Sunday’s attack, the third this year, comes just over a fortnight after 22-year-old local Alexandre Rassica was killed by a shark who bit off his leg.

Champion Surfer Killed In Shark Attack!

Champion surfer Mathieu Schiller was killed in a frenzied shark attack that lasted less than 30 seconds after he was dragged from his surfboard on Bouncan Canot beach, on the French island of Réunion.

The 32-year-old was believed to have been attacked by a man-eating tiger shark that swam off afterwards.

Surfers searched for the Frenchman’s body afterwards but police said it was carried away in the waves.

‘There were around 20 people in shallow water and about five surfers out deeper when it happened,’ a witness told Réunion’s local news website.

‘We saw the shark’s nose emerge and then the man just vanished. It was very sudden, then the animal just swam off.

‘Some of those nearby tried to reach him but his body was dragged away by the current.’
Mr Schiller’s death is the second fatal shark attack on the island in the Indian Ocean this year. Three other people have been injured by sharks there since January, including one man whose leg was bitten off.

The attack also follows that of British honeymooner Ian Redmond, 32, who was savaged while swimming 9m (30ft) off the island of Praslin in the Seychelles last month.

‘Although attacks are rare, sharks in this area can strike without warning at any moment,’ said shark expert Remy Tezier.

Red flags would now be put up at beaches with a high risk of shark attacks and water sports would be banned, a Réunion official said.

Mr Schiller, the European team body boarding champion in 1995, opened a surf school on Réunion in 2008.

Shark Shuts Down French Riviera!

Tourists visiting the French Riviera have been left high and dry after a shark sighting prompted a swimming ban.

The alert was issued yesterday after lifeguards patrolling in a motorboat spotted a creature measuring more than seven feet long.

Red ‘no swimming’ flags were also raised in the resorts of Villeneuve – Loubet and St. Laurent-du-Var, as people in boats telephoned warnings about the suspected shark, which had a large dorsal fin and a white belly. It was swimming some 150 feet off the coast, prompting fears that it might be wounded or ill, and might start attacking swimmers.

The French ban was lifted by this morning.
