A rare giant squid was captured in the Gulf of Mexico for the first time in decades.
The giant squid was caught by scientists July 30 off the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s the first one identified in the Gulf of Mexico since 1954 but scientists figure there are a lot more out there. The creature’s capture was just announced Sept. 21.
The 19.5-foot-long, 103-pound squid was caught at depth of more than 1,500 feet in a special trawl net as part of a research cruise funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Wonder what else is down there.

More on the man bitten by a shark over the weekend off the Louisiana coast… 62-year old Chris Haynes goes into surgery today and apparently the shark bit him on his ankle, severing just about all of his ligaments and taking off about half of his foot. Yeesh! Haynes was bitten while wading in the water, fishing at Breton Sound.

A 56-year-old man was bitten by a shark this morning while fishing in Breton Sound and had to be airlifted 65 miles to New Orleans.
Coast Guard rescuers stationed in Venice received a radio transmission from the motor vessel Predator at about 10 a.m. that a passenger aboard the vessel had been bitten by a shark.
Dispatchers notified Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans, which launched an MH-65C dolphin rescue helicopter and crew. The Coast Guard caught footage of a rescue swimmer being lowered down to the boat and later bringing the man up in a basket.
The helicopter arrived in New Orleans at about 11:40 a.m., and EMS transported the man to a local hospital.
His condition is unknown.
