5th Shark Attack of The Year For New Smyrna!

A surfer was bitten this morning as he paddled out on his board about a quarter mile south of the jetty at the 2800 block in New Smyrna Beach, said Capt. Tammy Marris.

While the attack left a 3-inch deep cut on the arm of Daniel Jorgensen, 25, of Winter Park, Jorgensen, who was in 6 feet of water, refused transport to the hospital, Marris said.

“He said he would drive himself to the hospital,” Marris said.

The attack, reported just after 11 a.m., is this year’s fifth shark bite, Marris said.

Local fishing guide and surfer Capt. Patrick Preston said he was out for a surf and was only 10 feet away from Jorgensen when he was bitten.

“I saw the swirl, the shark swirled real hard, probably about five feet from me when I was duck diving (through a wave),” Preston said. “I looked over and there was mullet jumping all over this guy and then the whole (expletive) shark came out of the water.

“It was a big shark. More than likely (a bull),” he said. “I’ve never seen a black tip or anything get that big.”

New Smyrna Beach surfer and Surfer magazine photographer Patrick “Tupat” Eichstaedt said an 8-foot bull shark has been seen cruising the same sandbar where Jorgensen was bitten for days now.

New Smyrna Shark Attack #4!

A surfer was bitten by a shark off the coast of New Smyrna Beach on Friday morning, Volusia County Beach Patrol said.

Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris said that the 19-year-old surfer was in about four feet of water when he was bitten on the foot just after 11 a.m.

Marris said the teen suffered cuts to his ankle and foot. He was treated at the scene, and planned to take himself to the hospital.

Marris said that signs are posted in the area warning of dangerous wildlife. It was not clear what type of shark attacked the surfer.

Flying Shark!!

Orlando Sentinel photographer Jacob Langston was out in the waters of New Smyrna Beach making a video of a surfer when another surfer exclaimed to him, “Dude! Did you see that?!”

Langston’s focus was on his subject in the foreground of his camera and didn’t see the four-foot spinner shark jumping over another surfer.

It wasn’t until he was back in the office editing his video that he realized he had captured the awesome moment in the background.

Carefully watch the back area in between the two surfers, and you will see the shark jumping over a surfer.

Second Shark Bite of the Year for Volusia County!

A surfer was bitten by a shark while surfing near the Harvard Drive beach approach in Ormond Beach, Volusia beach officials said.

Adrian Bronson, 37, was in shallow water in the ocean around 6:30 a.m. today when he felt a shark bite his calf, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris.

He sustained minor puncture wounds and didn’t go to the hospital, Marris said. After surfing, he went to work, she said.

This is the second shark bite incident off Volusia County beaches this year.

New Smyrna’s First Shark Bite of the Year!

A 49-year-old surfer from Deltona got the year’s first shark bite out of the way, a Volusia County Beach Patrol officer said Saturday.

Ronald White took a nibble to his right ankle Friday in about 3 feet of water off the Beachway Avenue approach in New Smyrna Beach, agency spokeswoman Capt. Tammy Marris said.

“By the bite, it was a pretty small shark — probably a 1 to 2 footer,” Marris said. White, who didn’t see the shark that bit him, was treated for the minor injury on-scene and declined further treatment.

Marris said she hasn’t seen sharks in the water this year, but she has seen several stingrays.

Surfer Snaps Pic Of Charging Shark!

University of Central Florida student Kris Kerr was swimming with his camera in the inlet at New Smyrna Beach this past weekend when he said mullet started leaping out of the water. That’s when a 6-foot shark made a beeline directly toward him.

According to Wesh.com, Kerr said he was able to snap a picture of the shark before punching the shark in the side of the head. He said he thinks it was a bull shark. Kerr said Surfer Magazine may be using his picture for a two-page spread.

Volusia County Kicks Off The Weekend With 2 Shark Attacks!

Volusia County adds attacks #3 and #4 to this year’s list. Authorities said a 24-year-old surfer was bitten on his left thigh, just below the hip. The surfer was treated at the scene and was then able to drive himself to Bert Fish Medical Center for further care.

Rescuers said the surfer told them he paddled through a huge circle of bait fish, then saw the shark. The surfer said the shark was probably 4 to 5 feet long.

Meanwhile another surfer was bitten on the hand at Ponce Inlet.

Shark Bite #2 For New Smyrna!

A 55-year-old New Smyrna Beach man became Volusia County’s second shark bite victim of 2010 over the weekend.

Deputy Chief Mike Hensler said the surfer, identified as Jimmy Johnston, told Beach Patrol officers he was sitting on his surfboard with his feet out of the water Saturday near the Ponce de Leon Inlet’s south jetty.

He said he saw a baitfish jump into the air nearby. It was followed by a small spinner shark, Hensler said.

“The guy said the shark missed the fish, but grabbed his foot,” Hensler said.

In alarm, Johnston pulled his right foot from the shark’s mouth, causing most of the injury, which consisted of two cuts to the top and seven to the bottom of his foot.

Johnston becomes Volusia’s second bite victim of the year. The first was in May when a 10-year-old from Orlando suffered a minor bite while playing in shallow water near 20th Avenue, also in New Smyrna Beach.
