Canadian police and coast guards on both sides of the border went on the alert on Sunday morning when fishermen off the coast of Nova Scotia reported a shark with a leg in its mouth. The appendage turned out to be a prosthetic limb that a fisherman attached to the shark.
It all started when some fishermen hauled a shark on board and one of the men decided it would be funny if he unhooked his prosthetic limb and put it in the shark’s belly. But news of the tomfoolery began crackling across shortwave radios and a crew aboard another boat (not realizing it was a joke) contacted the Canadian Coast Guard.

A 6-year-old girl’s leg was broken when she was struck by a sturgeon while riding on a boat in the Suwannee River.
Taylor Lane Owen was a passenger in the 20-foot boat, along with her parents and other family members Sunday, when a three foot sturgeon jumped out of the river.

The FDA is warning consumers not to buy or eat imported fish labeled as monkfish, which actually may be puffer fish, containing a potentially deadly toxin called tetrodotoxin. Eating puffer fish that contain this potent toxin can result in serious illness or death.
Consumers concerned that they may have purchased this fish should contact their retailer and ask if the product was received from Hong Chang Corp.
Two people in the Chicago area became ill after consuming homemade soup containing the fish. One was hospitalized due to severe illness.
Initial symptoms occur 30 minutes to several hours after food containing the toxin is consumed. Tingling of the lips and tongue occurs fist, then tingling of the face and extremities and numbness follow. Subsequent symptoms may include headache, balance problems, excessive salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Consumers experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical care and are encouraged to report their illness to local health authorities. In severe cases, muscles can become paralyzed, and death may follow from respiratory muscle paralysis.

Some mauled body parts were found yesterday off a northern NSW Australia beach during a massive search for a 45-year-old man who vanished on Tuesday while swimming. Ew. The human remains showed evidence of a shark attack, but it hasn’t been confirmed that it was the same man that went missing.

A boat loaded with Haitians capsized early today, and about 20 bodies have been found, some partially eaten by sharks. Ew. The police recovered 63 people from the vessel after it capsized about a half-mile south of Providenciales Island, Turks and Caicos, in the Atlantic Ocean.
Survivors told police there had been about 150 people aboard the boat.
An Associated Press reporter saw about a dozen bodies that had been pulled from the water and some of the corpses had limbs chewed off.

Knife-wielding smugglers forced 450 Somalis and Ethiopians overboard into stormy seas along a remote stretch of Yemen coastline at Ras-Alkalb in the Gulf of Aden last Thursday. The smugglers forced their passengers overboard so they could make a speedy departure after being spotted by Yemeni security forces. The number of people confirmed dead has risen to 29. Seventy-one people are missing. Passengers who resisted the smugglers were stabbed or beaten with wooden and steel clubs, then thrown overboard where some were attacked by sharks!
