It wasn’t a good weekend for two mammals on the northern Oregon coast – a seal and a sea lion both washed up with what appear to be major shark bites from a great white.
On Friday, a dead harbor seal drifted onto the beach at Seaside with a two-foot chunk taken out of its back. Apparently, the entire backbone is gone. Ew.
Meanwhile, an extremely unhappy California Sea Lion has been resting on a beach since Saturday with a foot-wide shark bite in it’s lower back.

A cyberpunk walrus with a satellite radio tracker attached to his tusk… kinda sad. But then then there’s also the remote-controlled sea lion who’s apparently been dissed by the non-remote-controlled sea lions. Somebody should introduce these two.

A 13-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a huge sea lion off Lancelin, AU.
Ella Murphy was mauled by the 600lb monster while she was standing on her surfboard tow-surfing behind a boat on Friday. The sea lion leapt from the water and grabbed her by the throat! It was about to attack a second time, but the driver of the boat managed to block the attack with the boat and rescue her.
Ella’s got a nasty wound under her chin, a broken jaw and three of her teeth were knocked out.
