All the beaches in the area have been closed until further notice.

“I tried to fight the shark off, but it became (more) aggressive and started dragging me by the feet under the water,” Denton said.

Friends and other surfers helped him to get to a doctor.

Paramedics on the scene had said Denton may need to have the tendons on his feet and on the insides of both ankles re-attached. Yeouch!

Fiji Diver Believed To Be Victim of Shark Attack

Divers are combing Yadua waters in Bua for a man believed to be the victim of a shark attack.

Captain Kaukau Corrie said they watched helplessly as fellow diver, Henry Usimewa, 19, struggled and fought off an unseen creature before he was dragged beneath the waves.

Mr Corrie said when they rushed to his aid less than half a minute later, Mr Usimewa was nowhere to be seen.

“Around 9.30am we spotted him surface about 15 metres from the boat,” said Capt Corrie. “I can still hear his screams as he fought off something that pulled him under. It was terrifying.

“He was wearing his diving jacket but was pulled clean from it.

“We looked whole day and whole of Tuesday but we couldn’t find him except for his diving gear and sack of sucuwalu.

“We saw that his regulator hose had been bitten off. We are horrified and scared to dive in this area.”

The search for Mr Usimewa is expected to be called off today.

Turns Out Aussie Attacker Was Not A Great White…

A scientist has ruled out claims a Sydney surfer was attacked by a great white shark this morning, pinpointing the attacker as the usually docile, bottom-dwelling wobbegong.

Paul Welsh, 46, was attacked while teaching his 10-year-old son to surf yesterday at the Mona Vale Basin on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Mr Welsh said he had to cling to a rock to fight off the animal, which had latched onto his leg.

“I didn’t see it [but] my son said he saw it before, which he obviously didn’t tell me and he waited for dad to get bitten.

“Rather me than him, because it probably would have taken his leg off.”

The victim was released from hospital around midday after doctors found a tooth fragment in his leg.

Uh-Oh, Shark Attack in Australia Today

A man was rushed to the hospital after being attacked by a great white shark in Australia today.

The man, Paul Welsh, was surfing with his 10-year-old son this morning, close to shore, when the 6 ft shark attacked him in shallow water.

Welsh was left with some deep lacerations to his legs and he has at least one shark’s tooth still in his leg.

Witnesses said Welsh grabbed on to the rocks to try and pull himself to shore and the great white tried to drag him back into the water.

Welsh managed to break free and scramble to shore. His wife drove him to Mona Vale Hospital for treatment.
