Kevin Moraga, 15, suffered a shark attack while surfing with friends in Playa Grande, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste at 12:15 a.m. on Sunday.
Elidio Mendoza, from the Cartagena Red Cross, said Moraga has “considerable wound” in his left thigh.
“Happily, in spite of the injury, the boy was conscious and vital signs were also good,” Mendoza said. “But obviously he had fainted due to the blood loss.”
The Cartagena Red Cross said they have not attended to any shark attacks in recent years at Playa Grande.
Moraga remains under observation in an intensive care unit at Hospital La Anexión on the Nicoya peninsula in Guanacaste.

A diver in Jupiter was the victim of a shark attack Sunday afternoon. The victim was bitten in the leg.
The victim, Daniel Webb, was brought to the Seaport Marina, located on 1095 North A1A, by a boat in the area. Webb was then transported to Jupiter Medical Center once Palm Beach Fire Rescue arrived.
According to Jupiter Medical Center, he is currently in stable condition.
Volusia County Beach Patrol officials said a shark bit a 19-year-old in the calf on Monday afternoon. The 19-year-old is the third person to be bitten by a shark off the coast of Volusia County this year. The teen was wading in the water near the 27th Avenue beach approach in New Smyrna Beach when the shark nipped him.
The teen was treated at the scene and is recovering Tuesday. Officials said the shark was about three or four feet long.
Kori Robertson was bitten by a shark at about 3 p.m. on Memorial Day hanging at the beach on Follett’s Island in waist-deep water about 50 yards from shore.
Robertson and her friend Shelby thought it might have been a jellyfish until they looked at her leg and saw the teeth marks. Her boyfriend wrapped a towel around the wound to stop the bleeding and rushed her to UTMB in Galveston.

A man died after being attacked by a shark at Cape Vidal in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the man had been spearfishing with a group of people at Cape Vidal, 150km north of Richards Bay, when he was attacked around midday.

A surfer was bitten by a shark while surfing near the Harvard Drive beach approach in Ormond Beach, Volusia beach officials said.
Adrian Bronson, 37, was in shallow water in the ocean around 6:30 a.m. today when he felt a shark bite his calf, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris.
He sustained minor puncture wounds and didn’t go to the hospital, Marris said. After surfing, he went to work, she said.

Riviera Beach police say the man was at Phil Foster Park on Tuesday when a 12-foot bull shark bit him on the calf. Officials say the man was conscious and responsive as he was transported to a nearby hospital.
The man’s name and condition weren’t immediately available.
