An 19 ft shark terrified three fishermen as it circled their boat for 25 minutes off Mandurah yesterday.
Rob Worthington, 28, said the shark was longer than his fibreglass cruiser and approached the boat while it was anchored on a reef. But the fishermen were unable to get away because the boat’s anchor was wedged in the reef. They called for assistance from water police, who were on the way to help when the anchor finally came free. Phew!

Two large trucks with police escorts flashing their lights rumbled up to the world’s largest aquarium early Friday with its newest residents, Yushan and Taroko—two whale sharks that had made an 8,000-mile journey from Taiwan. Their arrival comes just over four months after the death of Ralph, another whale shark that was a star of the Georgia Aquarium when it opened in 2005.
Lets hope Yushan and Taroko last a little longer than Ralph did…

Veterinarians were surprised to find that Tidbit (the female shark that died last week after she was given sedatives when she bit an aquarium worker) was pregnant when they performed a necropsy.
And get this… the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Sciences Center has no male black tipped sharks. Hmmm….

Scientists desperate for reluctant sharks to mate and produce offspring at an aquarium in northwest England plan to pipe the romantic music of Mozart, Beethoven and Puccini into the tank.
Bloodnose, a 20-year-old male brown shark, has been giving 15-year-old Lucy the cold shoulder since they were introduced a year ago.
Studies have shown that fish can listen and process melodies like human beings. They’re hoping a little romantic music will put Bloodnose in the mood.

Two wayward whales made it 20 miles back toward the ocean before balking at a Sacramento River bridge and swimming in circles, apparently upset by vibrations from the traffic.
The humpbacks, nicknamed Delta and Dawn, had traveled 90 miles inland before turning around at the Port of Sacramento on Sunday. They were making progress Monday until they reached the Rio Vista Bridge and began swimming in circles.
Scientists theorized that the whales began circling because vibrations from traffic upset them. The pair could not be coaxed forward even when the drawbridge was raised to halt the flow of vehicles.

The Georgia Aquarium has just launched a zebra shark webcam where you can (safely) view some baby zebra sharks.
