Helicopter Pilot Saves Surfers from Shark

helicopter.jpg
A honeymoon couple sitting in a helicopter above South Africa’s Plettenberg Bay got a front row seat to a close encounter between five surfers and a great white shark.

The 11 ft shark was spotted by a helicopter pilot who was flying the couple and another passenger over the beach.

The pilot saw the shark approaching the surfers about 150 ft off shore, then flew his helicopter down towards the surfers to warn them with hand signals to swim away – but the surfers thought he was just waving hello!

When the shark was just 15 ft from the surfers, the pilot flew his chopper between the shark and the surfers creating a diversion and the shark swam off. Phew!

8 ft. Tiger Shark Caught (and Released)

shark_catch1.jpeg
David Baker caught an 8-foot tiger shark Saturday morning at Poolenalena Beach in Hawaii just a few days after a large shark nipped at a woman snorkeling about a mile up the coast.

The Kahului resident said he saw no reason not to return the shark to the sea.

“There are thousands and thousands of sharks out there. I’ve returned them all, and I’ve never had any problems with sharks,” he said. “I know they bite people, but that’s the ocean. That’s where they live, and people killing one or two sharks, that’s not going to do anything to stop them from biting.

“Anyway, it’s illegal to leave a dead shark on the beach.”

Yeah, thanks Dave…

Packed Boat Sinks in Shark-Infested Waters

sharkinfested.jpg
A boat loaded with Haitians capsized early today, and about 20 bodies have been found, some partially eaten by sharks. Ew. The police recovered 63 people from the vessel after it capsized about a half-mile south of Providenciales Island, Turks and Caicos, in the Atlantic Ocean.

Survivors told police there had been about 150 people aboard the boat.

An Associated Press reporter saw about a dozen bodies that had been pulled from the water and some of the corpses had limbs chewed off.

hammerhead.png
A 10-foot long hammerhead shark washed up on Paradise Beach, FL, twice.

The female shark first washed up on the beach overnight. A fisherman saw it was still alive, so he pushed back into the water. But the shark washed ashore again late Monday morning and died.

Even Bama’s Got Sharks…

alabama.jpg
Purple flags warning swimmers about dangerous marine life were posted in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Wednesday after lifeguards spotted a shark near a public beach in Alabama’s Gulf of Mexico. The flags were taken down late Wednesday afternoon but many beachgoers stayed out of the water. Smart thinking, ‘cuz you know when one shark is spotted, there’s ten to fifteen more.

Lifeguards say the purple flags could go back up later this week if more sharks are spotted.
