VIDEO: Big Ol’ Shark Spotted Off Melbourne Beach!

An 8ft shark was spotted swimming around the pier at Brighton Beach this morning, about 15ft away from swimmers.

The shark was spotted by a woman running on the pier, who immediately reported the sighting.

There were about four or five people in the water near the shark, totally unaware until someone pointed it out. They left the water unharmed.

Sharks Spotted Near Missing Swimmer’s Body

Three large tiger sharks forced a search team to halt its efforts yesterday to locate and recover the body of a missing swimmer from Northern California who had disappeared from Laniākea Beach in Hawaii on Tuesday evening.

A helicopter spotted the sharks at about 7:30 a.m. near a body that was floating roughly a half mile off Pāpa’iloa Beach.

Lifeguards issued a shark warning and closed all beaches within one mile of the area.

Following ocean safety protocol, the fire department would not allow its rescue divers in the water for a 24-hour period. But the air search continued.

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai’i is helping the swimmer’s wife of six years and his family. Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai’i officials described the swimmer as a 35-year-old man from Beijing who was living in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Other family members will arrive from Beijing on Saturday, VASH officials said.

Helicopter pilots described the animals around the swimmer as 12- to 15-foot-long tiger sharks.

Big Ol’ Shark Spotted At New Zealand Beach

A 23 ft shark spotted near a Christchurch beach in New Zealand forced lifesavers to clear the water on one of the busiest days of the year.

Life saving manager Dougal Holmes said South Brighton Beach was cleared after police reported a shark sighting near Waimairi Beach at 2pm yesterday and signs were put up to warn beachgoers.

He said the beach clearance was a precautionary measure only, as shark attacks were extremely rare.

Ho’okipa, a popular surfing spot, was closed from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for one mile both north and south of the surfing reef. The beach park remained open.

Sharks Shut It Down In Florida

Beaches at Singer Island have been closed for two days due to numerous shark sightings.

Every year at this time, sharks of just about every variety – spinner, reef, hammerhead and bull sharks – follow schools of migrating fish along the Florida coastline.

Double red flags are normally posted to warn swimmers of the danger. The risk is even greater in the morning and late afternoon hours when the sharks normally feed.

Dozens, if not hundreds, were seen swimming very close to shore Wednesday and Thursday. Many were cruising in just three to four feet of water.

Lifeguards identified the vast majority as spinner sharks but a few tiger sharks were in the mix as well.

Hobie Hammerheads!

A shark alert was raised at Hobie Beach in South Africa yesterday after several hammerhead sharks had been spotted at the popular beach.

A lifeguard said seven sharks about a 3ft in length had been spotted but a photographer on the scene saw two larger ones of about 12ft in length.

Lifesaver Kirstin Jaftha, who was on duty at Hobie Beach yesterday morning about 9.30am, said people on the beach had alerted lifeguards to the presence of two dolphins near Shark Rock Pier – and seven sharks. “The bathers were temporarily cleared from the water and we raised the shark warning flags after we confirmed there really were sharks, but people were allowed to swim close to the shore.”

A spokesperson said this was the first time shark warning flags had been raised at Hobie Beach.

Mating Hammerheads Caught On Film

A large school of hammerhead sharks has been spotted carrying out a rarely seen mating ritual about half a mile off Perth’s northern beaches.

The 17 sharks, some up to 12 ft long, were filmed from a Channel Nine helicopter Monday morning.

Shark expert Hugh Edwards said the ritual had only been filmed twice before, once off Mexico and once near the Rowley Shoals off WA’s North-West coast.

10 Foot Shark Spotted in Hawaii!

A 10-foot shark was spotted at Maili Beach on the west side of Oahu Thursday around 1:30 p.m. by an on-duty police officer.

Bryan Cheplic, public information officer of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, said lifeguards were informed and they cleared the water and posted warning signs.
