Shark Sightings Close Jersey Beaches!

Beaches for several miles north of Island Beach State Park were closed for hours yesterday after two sharks were spotted swimming near the shorelines.

Surfers first reported five-foot-long sharks just off the surf break around 10 a.m. at Seaside Park. The sharks cruised the beach for about four hours, at some points coming as close as about 20 yards offshore.

Seaside Park beaches were reopened about 2 p.m., but reports of what are believed to be the same sharks closed down beaches at Seaside Heights, the next town north on the coast, for much of the afternoon.

Sharks in Oily Water

Dozens of sharks follow fish fleeing oil spill to Alabama shoreline

Video footage shot on June 18 by Ben Raines of the Press-Register and uploaded the following day captured both oil in the water and a Gulf water teeming with sharks.

There were 20 or more sharks at a time in shallow water off the coast of Alabama, and most of them were more than 5 feet long. Several were 8 feet or larger. Whether they were driven toward shore by low oxygen in deeper water remains an open question. But, there were definitely an unusually high number of sharks swimming just off the beach.

Shark Sighting Stops Sydney Race

A shark sighting forced the cancellation of the annual Tamarama to Clovelly ocean swim halfway through the event.

Race director Joel Turner said about half of the 850 or so entrants were not able to swim out after a shark was spotted off Bronte Beach in Sydney’s east about 12.30pm.

About 100 swimmers were escorted to shore by race officials part way through the course. Nobody got eaten though.
