Chuck Anderson is in Washington today to save the thing that bit off his arm.
Back in June 2000, when he was swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off Alabama, a seven-foot bull shark came up from underneath, knocking him out of the water, snapped off four of his fingers, chomped at his belly, then ripped away his right arm below the elbow.
The attack almost killed Anderson, but it also turned him into an advocate for sharks.
Anderson is in Washington for what could be the largest gathering of American shark-attack survivors to date — and certainly one of the oddest lobbying blitzes ever on Capitol Hill. At least nine survivors plan to press the Senate to put new restrictions on fishing for sharks.

A teenager is recovering after receiving a puncture wound from a stingray at Panama City Beach, FL yesterday.
The victim, a 17-year-old North Carolina teen, was stabbed in the torso (yeouch) while he was swimming just 30 feet off shore.
He was rushed to the hospital but the puncture wound does not appear to be life threatening.

It’s only been two months since 14-year-old Hannah Mighall was mauled by a 15ft shark at Tasmania’s Binalong Bay, but she’s ready to get back in the water.
The teenager admits she’s nervous about surfing again, which probably has a little to do with the more than 200 internal and external stitches she needed after the attack. But Hannah says she loves the beach and has missed being able to surf since the attack.
Hannah’s doctor has given her the all-clear to surf again and she plans to go surfing with friends this Sunday, but not anywhere near the spot where she was attacked.

Achmat Hassiem, the lifeguard whose foot was bitten off by a great white shark during a life-saving exercise at Sunrise Beach last August, is hoping to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
Hassiem says he is still nervous about going into the ocean (duh), but the loss of his leg hasn’t slowed him down. He says he swims faster now than he did with two legs.

Eric Nerhus, who was almost swallowed by a shark yesterday, has signed on with “high profile” celebrity consultant Harry M. Miller to handle the story his miraculous escape from the jaws of a great white shark. Miller manages some of Australia’s best known personalities, including the, ahem, Big Brother housemates. Hello, Oprah?
