Those Whales are Still Stranded?

stranded_whales.jpg
It’s been more than two weeks since those two wayward whales, Delta and Dawn, got stranded in the Sacramento River after making wrong turn.

Despite many suggestions (including fake orcas, magnets and pipe-banging) rescuers haven’t had any luck coaxing them back towards the ocean.

Severed Whale Fin Found on Washington Beach

severedfin.jpg
Someone walking a dog along a Washingotn beach found a 100-pound severed orca fin on Tuesday.

The dorsal fin was found on South Beach at Twin Harbors State Park near Westport. It was just sticking right up out of the sand.

Canadian officials said the fin belonged to T086, an adult female transient killer whale known to Canadian researchers since 1984 by the distinct markings on the fin.

The fin had clearly been cut off with a knife, however, the rest of the whale hasn’t been found.

For some reason, an unsually large number of right whales have been congregating in Cape Cod lately. At least 120 of the 400 right whales left in the world have been seen in the bay this spring.

Tiger Sharks Chow Down on Whale

lunchtime3.png
A 30 ft whale became lunch for a pack of tiger sharks off Australia’s Gold Coast yesterday. Fishing expert Paul Burt, who happened to have been in the vicinity at the time, actually DIVED INTO THE WATER to get these photos. Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin said the man’s behavior was “irresponsible”and “so dangerous it is incomprehensible”, duh. Beachgoers have been urged to use caution while swimming on the Gold Coast.

A 15 ft juvenile minke whale was seen was cruising around Gowanus Bay, the outlet from the mile-long Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn yesterday. It appeared to be in good health at the time. The whale was being monitored overnight, with the hopes that it would decide to leave the area and swim out into the harbor, where the water is deeper. Good luck little whale!

Whale Collision Injures 27, Kills 1

whalexing.jpg
Always look both ways before crossing the ocean. One person has died and 27 others have been injured after a South Korean passenger ferry collided with what appears to be a whale.

The ferry had been en route from the southern port of Busan to the Japanese city of Fukuoka with 215 passengers on board when it slammed into a large object.

They’re guessing it was a whale, judging from the fact that the water around the ship turned blood red after the collision.
