Missing Man Mauled by Sharks!

A Victorian builder was found dead in shark-infested waters off the Queensland coast. The 48-year-old man’s body was found mauled by sharks, 13 hours after he went missing, off Palm Island.

Five helicopters and the Water Police searched for almost eight hours before recovering the body. The man was last seen on Fantome Island, part of the Palm Island group – 65 kilometres off Townsville. He and three friends were enjoying a day out, when their boat floated away. Emergency Management Queensland’s Allan Jefferson said: “Four of them went swimming out to the boat, three of them made it and the fourth one never got there.

“The person has gone into the water to retrieve the boat last night and has not returned.”

Police were alerted around 7.30pm and scoured the waters, along with a rescue helicopter until 1am.

Search efforts intensified at first light, with five helicopters from Townsville, Cairns, and Rockhampton combining efforts with the coastguard and other fishermen.

It is still unclear whether the man drowned or was taken by sharks first.

“We noticed a very big shark in the search area this morning,” Allan said.

Inspector Ian Houghton, of Townsville Police, said: “The body was retrieved from water by the water police.

“The exact cause of death will be determined at a later time.”

It is hoped an autopsy will provide hope for loved ones.

Police are now in the process of contacting the man’s family. It is believed he is from Victoria working in North Queensland on refurbishment’s in the Palm Island region.

Shark Attack at North Carolina Beach!

According to a lifeguard with Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue, a young female adult was bitten by a shark in Kure Beach on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at around 5:00pm.

The victim was in fairly shallow water and sustained a shark bite on the ankle/foot area. The lifeguard stated that there was no question that the injury was the result of a shark bite.

Following the bite, the beach was closed and the victim was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. The lifeguard stated that the injury did appear quite severe.

If this is confirmed as an actual shark bite, it will mark the fourth shark bite in NC waters & the third bite at NC beaches this year.

Vieques Shark Attack!

A U.S. tourist who was swimming at night in a bioluminescent bay is recovering from a suspected shark bite that occurred in a tiny island near Puerto Rico, a doctor said Wednesday.

The woman underwent surgery for severed tendons near her ankle and is expected to recover, said Dr. Edwin Miranda, a spokesman for the Rio Piedras Medical Center, where the victim was treated.

Authorities didn’t release the woman’s name. The newspaper El Nuevo Dia described her as a 27-year-old woman from Idaho who was traveling alone, according to an acquaintance of hers in Puerto Rico.

Marine experts said they suspected a shark was to blame based on descriptions of the extent of the injuries, although they had not seen pictures of the bite.

The woman was bitten late Tuesday while swimming at Mosquito Bay in Vieques, an island popular with tourists just east of Puerto Rico. The bay attracts hundreds of visitors with its bioluminescent waters filled with microscopic organisms that light up when something disturbs them.

Two Shark Attacks in Russia!

Swimming has been banned in the Sea of Japan off Russia’s Far Eastern Primorye Territory after two shark attacks in the past week have left two people hospitalized, Russian media report.

The first attack occurred Wednesday when a 25-year-old man lost both arms up to the elbow, Pravda reported. He was hospitalized in serious condition but expected to survive, according to the report.

Witnesses said the shark was about 13 feet long with large fins, according to the Pravda report.

The second attack occurred in a nearby area Thursday when a 16-year-old boy suffered severe wounds to his legs, RIA Novosti reported. The boy was hospitalized in Vladivostok, the report said. The boy’s diving suit prevented the shark from taking his legs, according to a Moscow Times report.

Authorities suspect the same shark was responsible for both attacks, according to the Pravda report.
