A shark apparently bit a 17-year-old girl in knee-deep, (yeah, KNEE DEEP) water off Litchfield Beach in Georgetown County, South Carolina.
Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Edwards said that the girl, from Columbia, was bitten on the foot around 2 p.m. Saturday and likely will need stitches.
Midway Fire Rescue spokesman Bob Beebe says no one saw the shark, but the marks left on the teen’s foot are consistent with a shark bite.

A giant catfish met it’s maker when it tried to eat a soccer ball in Germany. Police patrolling the Main River say it’s the weirdest case they’ve seen in 30 years.
The 6 ft fish was found on Monday floating in a river with the ball wedged in its mouth.
The catfish had evidently bitten into the ball and suffocated.
Catfish are among the biggest freshwater predators. They lie still and wait on the river beds to attack prey on the surface. Sometimes it’s ducks, sometimes soccer balls.

Human remains have been discovered in the Ka’u area of the Big Island of Hawaii where a man disappeared Saturday while picking opihi, a Hawaiian delicacy.
Hawaii County firefighters recovered shredded shorts, a bag to collect the small mollusks and human remains with what appear to be shark bites.
The cause of death is still being reported as “unknown” but Hawaii County police say an autopsy is scheduled.
Police have not confirmed whether the remains are of 58-year-old Nathan Labarios, who was reported missing Saturday afternoon by friends but Labarios, who was camping with friends, was last seen leaving to pick opihi.

If you’re in Hawaii, don’t forget to pack your Jellyfish Squish! Almost 2,000 box jellyfish unexpectedly invaded beaches along Waikiki and Ala Moana Beach Park yesterday, sending 177 people to seek treatment for stings.
Ocean Safety officials said the influx took them by surprise because they expected the peak to hit Friday, when 400 jellyfish were counted along south shores.
But as early as 10:30 a.m. yesterday, more than 40 people were standing in line at a Waikiki Beach lifeguard tower waiting to have stings tended to by city paramedics.
Ashlei Limbaga, 20, of Wahiawa, and her cousin, 8-year-old Wailani Pascua (pictured above), had barely gone in the water off Waikiki when Wailani started screaming in pain.
Warning signs have been posted and ocean safety experts say that the only way to prevent being stung is to stay out of the water. Duh.

A 37-year-old South Carolina man got bit on the hand by a shark while he was swimming in waters near Charleston.
Isle of Palms Fire Chief Ann Graham says the man was swimming near the beach Thursday morning when a roughly 5-foot-long shark nipped his hand.
Graham said that the man was visiting the area from Columbia and declined an ambulance. He went to a hospital in a personal vehicle.
The waters off Isle of Palms were closed in August last year after a man and a 9-year-old boy got munched on by sharks within hours of each other.

A 29-year-old surfer became New Smyrna Beach’s 12th victim so far this year when he was bitten on his left foot Thursday afternoon.
The surfer was sitting on his board with his feet dangling in the water when he was bit.
He swam ashore and was given first aid by a lifeguard.

A woman kayaking off the Catalina isthmus had a little run-in with a shark this weekend.
Bettina Pereira was in an area she has frequented for years when a shark bumped her kayak. At first she thought it was a whale, but then she saw the fin. The shark cruised under her and lifted the kayak up with it’s body. Bettina flew out and landed right on the shark!
Luckily, the shark swam away, and Bettina started swimming toward the shore where two men in a boat pulled up and helped her to safety.
Close call.

Kasey Edwards, 18, was swimming with some friends at Nubbin Slough, a canal near Lake Okeechobee, FL on Sunday when an alligator decided to rip his arm off.
The gator dragged Kasey under the water five times, then took his left arm off about 4 inches above the elbow. During the struggle, Kasey managed to gouge the gator’s eye and it finally spun around and swam off. Kasey didn’t even know he was missing an arm until he was swimming back to shore.
Later, the gator was caught and Kasey’s arm was found inside its stomach, but the arm was too damaged to reattach. Bummer.
